What we learned from recent snowstorm and how to prepare for the next

While winter is at the end now, New England weather is unpredictable and we should at all times be prepared for the snowstorm. There are several ways to protect yourself and your family during these major winter storms, and you should be aware in case you find yourself in an emergency. Here we’ve written a blog on what we learned from the recent snowstorms and how to prepare for the next one.

In the case of a power outage, keep the refrigerator and freezer door shut, ensuring your food stays insulated and cold for as long as possible. Don’t try to use an alternative power source like a furnace or generator inside the home, as your risk for carbon monoxide poisoning increases. If you are snowed in, make sure to keep your windows and doors closed. This will keep heat in your house, and prevent snow from falling in. Stock up on candles and charge all electronic devices if there is a chance the power might go out.

Pipes freezing or bursting is also a common problem in the colder winter months, especially for homes that are older or haven’t been properly maintained. If your pipes begin to freeze, try to turn faucets on and let water drip slowly through. The water moving through the pipes will keep them unfrozen. Additionally, try and wrap a hot towel around them and circulate air as much as possible around the pipes. If your pipes burst, immediately turn off the central valve and contact a qualified plumber or contractor who can assist.

With spring on the horizon, it is also the perfect time to do preventative maintenance on your home so that when the next major snowstorm hits, your home is prepared. Take some time this spring to check your siding for any major cracks or damage from the weather. This can ensure your home stays insulated next time winter weather hits.

As always, watch the weather and stock up on necessities to ensure you’re prepared for any weather situation. If you or your family get stuck or snowed in for an extended period, make sure to call for help.
